I wrote about my spring staples back in March and I’m here today with my summer staples! Once the weather finally warmed up it seems as though we went directly into summer, making my spring staples out of season. One day it was 50 degrees, the next day it was 90! I, for one, am glad of the change in weather. Summer is my favorite time on Long Island–it means warm evenings on the patio, long tennis games, and spending time on the water. My summer staples definitely reflect that! While a few things on my spring staples list (striped t-shirts and my Stubbs & Woottons) are also summer staples, I haven’t included them on this list. Below are my six most valuable pieces in my closet for the season.
Shorts
This is an obvious one, I think, but I live in shorts during the summer! I loved J. Crew’s original 4″ twill shorts, and have a few pairs, but need another for this summer. I’m not sure how I feel about their new “stretch twill.” I think I’ll have to order a pair and test them out. Have you tried them, and if so, did you like them? If not, do you have a pair of shorts you love?
Polo shirts
My default uniform for the summer is pretty much shorts, a polo, and boat shoes. That outfit can take me from lunch at the club to shopping in town and everything in between! It’s the perfect summer shirt. I prefer mine with a tennis tail.
Athletic wear
I play a lot of tennis in the summer, so I’m often found in tennis whites and my favorite sneakers. I also swim a lot. I prefer to swim in a one-piece, so I’m really glad that J. Crew brought back their classic scoopback swimsuit! It’s the perfect suit and I have two of them, just in case they stop making them again. I’m also eager to check out Summersalt’s suits–this one and this one look like great options.
Shift dresses
It’s no secret that I love a shift dress, and my classic Lilly shifts from my mother and grandmother are in constant rotation throughout the summer. They are perfect to dress up and down, as they are extremely comfortable for daytime wear and nice enough to wear to cocktail parties or nice dinners in the evening. Here are five shift dresses I love for this year!
Boat shoes
I wear my boat shoes all. the. time. in the summer, and more often than not they are filled with sand from a trip to the beach. They’re so easy to slip on and go with everything. I’ve always worn classic Sperry Top Siders, but a pair of Quoddys are the dream.
Sandals
I also live in my Palm Beach sandals. They are supremely comfortable and work for both casual wear and for the evenings. My favorite pair is a bone/white combination that works with literally every single outfit. It’s the perfect neutral!
